How to chooste the right tent?

When choosing a tent, it is important to think about some most important facts, in order to buy the right one. Not to have too small tent, or too heavy, to have it roomy for our purpose. And hopefully to have the right tent for conditions where we will use it. Some of these facts and questions will be mentioned on following lines.

How big should the tent be?
First question to take into consideration is the amount of people to be able to sleep in the tent. One, two, or even 7? Of course, tent for more people is heavier and bigger when packed.

What is the destination of our journey?
In different words, where do we plan our trip with our new tent. Do we plan to stay in camp site near beach for example. Or we plan to go for 4-day hiking trip across some mountain range, or even for expedition to hostile weather conditions. Based on the main destination, we should think about main, most important features and characteristics of our tent.
Tents for camping are bigger, more roomy, mostly for more people. Inside they are higher, but on other hand, they are more heavy. The thinking behind is, that we build such tent on one place and we stay on that place for longer period. Mostly, we come there with a car. We have to think, how high should the tent be inside. How many "rooms" beside the sleeping area there should be for our equipment and food. Naturally, the more "rooms" and higher construction, the tent is more heavy and bigger when packed.
Outdoor tents, suitable for hiking or bike trips are lighter, as we expect, that the tent is carried daily from one location to another and build every evening while packed every morning. When choosing such tent, we should minimize the weight. The maximal weight compared with size of the tent should be taken into consideration.
Tents for expeditions, are technically very comparable to outdoor tents. Materials are just more resistant, as sometimes such tents are used in winter.

Which materials to prefer?
Most of the tents in our offer have two wall construction. This means, that the tent is made of inner tent and outer tent. Inner tent is connected with bottom layer, and is from mesh material for better air ventilation. Outer tent is water resistant and protects people water and wind.
Higher water resistance on "paper" does not meant also in practice. Tent has to be build properly, and walls have to be stretched as good as possible. So in case of rain, water can slide down easily.
Tent construction is made from flexible rods. Materials, form which they are made, differ. For example, durawrap rods are in good price, but have lower resistance against heavy wind. On other hand, dural rods are more resistant, but more expensive.

Of course, when choosing a new tent, one can take more questions into consideration. For example colors, compatibility with additional shelters or availability of spare parts. At the end, we can play with 3 main attributes, between which we should compromise.
1. size of a tent (for how many people, and how many storage area)
2. how heavy (or how do we plan to use the tent. Carry it in a car on in our backpack)
3. price (limits used materials)

Wish you nice camping!
